About The RISE Above Scholarship

The RISE Above Scholarship is awarded to up to 3 incoming University of Nevada, Reno freshmen at $500 each for the fall semester of every academic year.

The award is based on the student’s community/leadership involvement, personal background and need. Applicants must exemplify the ability to have risen above life’s challenges and the desire to ascend further in their future.

This is a one-time scholarship and good for fall semester only. Award recipients must attend the University of Nevada, Reno.

All eligible high school seniors are invited to apply (see eligibility below).

This scholarship is available to those who are not eligible for federal financial aid. More specifically, we aim to award at least one scholarship to a DACA student or DREAMER.

We are fervent supporters of higher education and serve this mission by providing financial assistance to people of all backgrounds.

On top of awarding the scholarships, the gentlemen of NAK will also extend mentorship to the winners to ensure successful transition to UNR.

The scholarship is organized and awarded by the Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. Alumni Association at the University of Nevada.

  • Must be an incoming University of Nevada, Reno freshman for fall 2018
  • 3.0 minimum unweighted GPA
  • Must have community service/leadership involvement
  • Must be planning to enroll in 12 or more full-time undergraduate credits
  • Must submit résumé
  • Submit 1 letter of recommendation
  • Submit 500-word max personal essay on your background, how you’ve risen in life and how to plan to continue your ascent

Who Can Apply?

All incoming University of Nevada, Reno freshmen who will be attending school full time (12 or more credits in the fall 2018 semester) are welcome to apply.

When Is The Deadline To Apply?

Deadline to apply is midnight June 30, 2018.

When Will We Be Notified?

All applicants will be notified of their status by in early July 2018.

How Many Scholarships Are Being Awarded & For How Much?

Two-to-three scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $500 each.

When Will The Money Be Allocated To The Student’s Account?

The money will be allocated to the winners’ accounts in August 2018.

Can Students Who Are Not Eligible For Financial Aid Apply?

Yes. All students are welcome to apply, regardless of financial aid status. This includes DACA and DREAMER students.

Does Community Service Increase My Chances At Winning A Scholarship?

Yes. Not only is community service experience a common essay topic but your involvement in community service can distinguish you from other applicants.

Who Should I Ask To Write My Letter Of Recommendation?

Start by asking a teacher, employer or mentor. Do not ask a friend or family member. A letter of recommendation is similar to a professional reference; choose someone who can articulate your strengths and praise your accomplishments.

How Will Winners Be Chosen?

The winners must meet all of the standard criteria required for the scholarship, but also distinguish themselves from the rest of the applicants.
